The attached Flash presentation is an overview of materials presented
by Alan Plastow, founder of The Institute for Technology Asset
Management, at the Ohio Statehouse as part of the 2010 Ohio
Entrepreneurship Expo. The event was produced by the Ohio Department of Development, the Ohio Small Business Development Centers, and the Ohio Entrepreneur Centers.
Ohio is among the top five states for frequency of punitive software piracy and
license non compliance audits. Manufacturing enterprises top the list of
audit targets and even small businesses - as few as 5 computers - can easily find themselves
subjected to six figure fines, penalties and associated audit costs.
Not in Ohio? This is Still Useful Information for You!
The material presented here is a short list of strategies and tactics for use by
businesses in establishing and maintaining a compliant technology
environment. While no specific proactive methodology is certain, the
basic concepts discussed here will definitely get you started on a
proactive internal anti piracy initiative - without having to spend a
penny on new software, hardware, or consulting services.
Plastow is the author of Modern Pirates: The book the software police and copyright cops do not want you to read. This unique book steps you through the background and procedures for helping ensure your company does not become a defenseless software piracy audit target.

Are your corporate policies & procedures (P&Ps) genuinely
effective? If not, your company is wide open to an entire series of
very costly software piracy or copyright violation audits. In general,
P&Ps relating to the acquisition and use of copyright protected
products are either non-existent; or they are not communicated; or they
are not enforced. The result? You and your company are wide open to software audits as well as enforcement audits from any of the 26+ US (or 100+ global) copyright enforcement entities.
Here is the bottom line: Companies that do not have or do not enforce copyright-related policies and procedures will invariably wind up paying enormous fines and penalties when they are audited. And, with whistle-blower rewards up to $1,000,000, they WILL be audited--frequently by more than one copyright holder. After the audit(s), those same companies will be required to create and enforce these policies and procedures as part of their respective settlements. Do you want to reduce your exposure to six figure (plus) audit penalties by being proactive? If so--read on.
If not...

Go Ahead and Declare Technology Interdependence from your Shadow IT Environment: But, if you don’t do it carefully, you are in for a world of software piracy audit hurt.
I’ve been following the series of CIO Magazine articles addressing the realities of Shadow IT and, until, “The Declaration of Interdependence” appeared in the July issue, the logic was pretty solid. However, as I read this article, I could easily visualize the collective drooling of the well-funded and incredibly powerful copyright enforcement industry players across the country. If ever there was a commentary that literally guaranteed a punitive software piracy audit, this would be it.
“If I were an employee of one of the enforcement groups I would frame this material and hang it proudly in my office as a reminder of how secure my profession is and how very wealthy I will become.”
Here is why I am extremely concerned with the underlying message this article conveys: IT professionals, as a whole, do not have any idea how easily they expose their company—and their own professional futures—when they “…secure the network and (do) not worry about client devices…” or “...so I protect the institution, not the individual…”
“Sorry, Dave, but here be some serious legal dragons!”

When it comes to software piracy prevention audits, your ability to conduct and document your compliance with copyright can easily translate into tens--even hundreds--of thousands of dollars in losses or in savings. Conduct & document the enforcement audit correctly and you have little to worry about in terms of pirated software. Conduct and document incorrectly and you will get caught pirating software or music and you'll find yourself paying six figure fines and even more massive costs and penalties.
Read on to find some straight talk about how not to get caught in the anti piracy audit dragnet. You can also view a quick Flash presentation detailing many of your options for not getting caught in the piracy vise. (or should that be vice?)
