64% of projects last less than a year. (Source PMI member survey.)
The majority of projects are relatively quick and, to a certain extent,
relatively simple. The benefit of this limitation is that you, as a
project manager, can gain more experience in conducting projects and
your ability to initiate a more standard project management methodology
is enhanced.
Here is a strategy: Work within each project structure to build a more formal process for project initiation and planning. Follow that process and identify the savings you have achieved. When you keep track of, and learn from, these improvemnents you will discover both improved value for your project dollars AND improved professional credibility.
What do you think? Are your average projects short and sweet or long and complex? Let us know and we'll follow up.
